Resolve ownership over a Custom Domain

Occasionally a Custom Domain you own ends up connected to a CloudCannon Organization you no longer control, such as after a team dispute or a lapsed agency relationship. If you can still reach the other Organization, the quickest fix is for them to transfer the Site to you, which moves the domain and its SSL certificate at the same time. If you can't reach the Organization currently using the domain, CloudCannon's support team can help you recover the domain once you prove you own it.

It is important to note two things:

• If you use a Git Repository or storage provider, your website files are safely stored there. Losing access to a Custom Domain will not affect that. For this reason, we highly recommend connecting a Git Provider when you create your Site.
• How you prove you own the domain depends on whether you use CloudCannon DNS or External DNS.

When to contact support#

Contact our support team if a Custom Domain you own is connected to an Organization you can't reach or no longer control. Have ready:

• the domain name
• access to your domain registrar, and to your DNS provider if you use External DNS

Support will tell you how to prove you own the domain. The exact method depends on how your domain's DNS is configured. If you use External DNS, support will give you a TXT record to add at your DNS provider; being able to add it demonstrates you own the domain. If you use CloudCannon DNS, the DNS records sit inside the Organization you can't reach, so you prove ownership through your domain registrar rather than through CloudCannon.

Recreate your Site#

Once CloudCannon's support team transfers the domain to an Organization you control, a developer can recreate your Site from your files and re-host it on the domain. For more information, please read our documentation on getting started with CloudCannon and adding a Custom Domain to your Site.
