Recover access to your Organization

If the only Owner of an Organization has left or become unreachable, you may need to recover access before anyone can manage the Organization again. How you recover access depends on whether you can still sign in to the original Owner's account.

This article covers recovering an Organization when its only Owner is gone. If you're locked out of your own account, such as after losing your multi-factor authentication device, please read our documentation on generating new recovery codes.

The best protection is to avoid this situation altogether: keep more than one person in the Owners Permission Group, so ownership never depends on a single account. To set this up before an Owner leaves, please read our documentation on transferring ownership of an Organization.

Reset the password on the Owner's account#

Organizations are often created with a shared company email address, such as example@yourcompany.com. If you can still receive email at that address, you can reset the password and sign in. To reset the password:

  1. Open the forgotten password form.
  2. Enter the email address on the Owner's account.
  3. Set a new password using the reset link CloudCannon sends you.
  4. Sign in to the Owner's account.
  5. Add another person to the Owners Permission Group.

Your Organization now has more than one Owner, so access no longer depends on a single account. If the person you want to add isn't in your Organization yet, please read our documentation on adding a team member to your Organization and adding a team member to a Permission Group.

If the Owner's account has multi-factor authentication enabled and you don't have the device, resetting the password won't let you sign in. Ask our support team to help instead, as described below.

Ask CloudCannon to transfer ownership#

If you can't sign in to the original Owner's account or receive its email, recovering ownership requires identity verification that only our support team can carry out. Contact our support team to request an ownership transfer, and have ready:

  • your Organization name
  • the email address on the Owner's account
  • proof of your connection to the Organization, such as an invoice number

If our support team can't confirm your identity and your connection to the Organization, they may be unable to transfer ownership.
